Literature Text

Her heart thundered against her chest, drowning out the sounds around her. It wasn’t possible. It couldn’t be true. She stared at the paper grasped tightly in her hand, the words written there seared into her memory. Her fist clenched; the paper crumpled with ease. A single tear escaped down her cheek, the first of many more that she would cry that night, and the nights to come.

That first night, her grief filled her, and she was overcome with an uncontrollable rage. It bubbled up inside her, erupting in a howl of pain and sorrow. There were no witnesses to her loss of control. After, she had sunk to the ground, tears falling unhindered. The outburst had left her exhausted and numb.

It was only a week later that she found herself clutching another paper, identical to the last. Only the names on it were changed. She stared at it, her eyes cold. The crisp whiteness of the paper was a stark contrast to the whirlwind of emotion inside her. Her anger only lasted long enough for her to turn the letter into a snowfall of white. The tears came quickly after that.

In the following months, the tears seemed to never stop flowing. If she was not crying, then someone else was. All the tears were caused by the letters, no longer identical, some hurriedly penned in a brief moment of peace. The formal tone of the messages never changed.

Some called her cold when the letter arrived. Some said that it was no surprise that she felt so little. It had been an arranged marriage. She hadn’t cared about him. Her hand closed around the small gold band that had come with this letter. Her eyes scanned the words that had become burnt into her memory.

‘Miss Tara Ryat,
We regret to inform you that your fiancée, Greg Salmon, fell in battle on the 17th March. He died a soldier’s death, fighting for the freedom of our people. He shall not be forgotten.’

It wasn’t that she didn’t love him. It wasn’t that she felt nothing. Her emotions raged just beneath the surface, dominated by grief and a hatred of the war that had claimed so many of those close to her heart. A war that was no closer to ending then when it had begun.

There was nothing she wanted more then to express the pain she felt.

But she had no more tears to give.
After a VERY long absence from submitting anything, I have finally returned!

I really don't know what compelled me to write 'Tears'. I'd originally sat down to write a oneshot fanfic for Gundam SEED, but this idea came to me instead.

Well, hope you all like it!
